Trip to Sado Island

I just came back from a trip to the small island of Sado. The trip involved taking a bus to Tokyo, where I spent some time in Shinjuku.

From Shinjuku I took a night bus all the way to Niigata, a seven hour ride. It was still early, before dawn. I took the car ferry over to Sado Island. I watched the sun rise on the boat.

One of the first things I do is go to explore the caves of the Sado gold mine. The mine had been in use for over 400 years, closing in the 1980s. Most remarkable the mountain has been mined so extensively that it has been split in two. In the mountain, are robotic dioramas of mining operations in the mines.

On my first night at Sado, I went out and ended up meeting with a member of the city council. We went out drinking and singing karaoke.  The next day I continue exploring the island.

Returning home I take the Shinkansen from Niigata to Tokyo. The Shinkansen only took two hours. Sado was a fascinating place that I am glad I got to see.
